Sierra Tunnel - The above photograph is one of my earliest large format images, having
been made in 1973. It was made at a place called Andover on the Southern Pacific, below the tree
outside the tunnel lies Donner Lake. Yes a train did come while I was setting up the camera. The
railroad is double track here with left hand running. I walked into the tunnel, which is fairly long,
from the other end, relying on hearing any approaching train laboring up grade from behind me and
this worked and I was able to safely get out of the tunnel. The sky was full of smoke from forest
fires and this is why the distant peak is so faint.
